A Guide to the Stars: Iridonia

Sit back and relax as we take you on a trip around the galaxy. From the Core Worlds, right to the far reaches of the Outer Rim! This is your Guide to the Stars! This week we're taking a look at the Mid Rim world of Iridonia!

Iridonia is the homeworld of the Zabrak species with very harsh living conditions. As a result, the Zabrak have become quite a hardy species to cope with their homeworld's enviroment. They took to the stars and embraced space travel as soon as they developed the technology; by the time the Duros encountered the Zabrak, they had already colonized five systems. As a Mid Rim world, Iridonia is situated near key hyperspace lanes and is one of the key worlds that connects the Outer Rim to the Inner Rim. Also as a result of this, it was one of the first planets to be pulled into a war.

Alongside the Zabrak, Iridonia is home to two native species: the Hugglepup and the Blok. It is said that the Bloks are related to Banthas and they have become domesticated by the Zabrak; many of the male Zabrak are named after this native species. As for the Zabrak, sometimes referred to as Iridonians when referring to a native of Iridonia, they are most well known for their fierce sense of self-determination and an equally dominant need for independance. Although they are near human in appearance, Zabrak have a number of significant physical characteristics that set them apart. The most striking of these are the series of vesitgal horns that crown the heads of both male and female Zabrak.

The Zabrak and their homeworld, as well as several of their colonised worlds, seem to be constantly shrouded in battle. The first battle of Iridonia took place during the Great Sith War and was a major victory for Galactic Republic. It marked a turning point in which it gave the Republic forces and Jedi Order momentum to help defeat their Sith adversaries. Several of Iridonia's colonies along the Outer Rim fell to Mandalorians during the initial stages of the Mandalorian Wars. These losses pushed many of the Iridonian Zabraks to seek revenge by joining the Republic's war effort against the Mandalorian invaders.

As for Iridonia itself, it has changed hands a number of times. During the Mandalorian Wars, the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders launched a major offensive against the planet and were able to occupy it for a number of months before it was liberated by the Republic Military. During the Jedi Civil war, the Republic and the Sith Empire fought fiercely over the planet and both sides used it as a staging ground duing the conflict.

There's much more to Iridonia than constant battles and bantha relatives, but that's all we've got time for. Be sure to check up on the HoloNet if you want to know more. For now, this has been your Guide to the Stars! Check back again next week!

Force Reflection: Why so serious?

No, not the Joker; a joker. As in someone who's foolish or inept. Someone who doesn't take anything seriously. Seriously? If being a joker is like being the Joker, then wouldn't being serious make you Batman?

When in-game and not roleplaying, people are either Batman or Joker in chat. Some are trying to get stuff done; for instance, looking for groups or looking to sell or buy items, and others just mess around and blurt out random jokes or comments just to make people laugh and go "^" (which I think is the MMO's version of the Like Button).

In RP, it is sort of the same, but not entirely. The Jokers would be the ones who always get drunk and mess around with other people. People who are more like Batman would always be on duty (if they have any), never stop to chat, and always takes the mission at hand as their first and only priority. Why? Why would your character be so devoted to their objective and not spend at least a couple minutes doing something unproductive? Sure, there are some that even both playing fields out. Maybe one day they spend in the cantina, and the other they are on Hoth, scouting for enemy troops. But you would have to choose a side eventually to answer today's Force Reflection!

So today's Force Reflection asks you: Are you Batman or Joker? Do you fool around a lot or are you serious most of the time? If you are mostly serious, why so serious?

Nik-Nak's Workshop: Electrostaff and Force Pikes

Welcome to Nik-Nak's Workshop. First of all we would like to thank all our readers for supporting our work! This week will be our final insight of a jawa's view of the world of tech! This week we're taking a look at two of the nastiest melee weapons out there: electrostaffs and force pikes!

The force pike—also referred to as a stun pole—is the name given to several similar weapons that have evolved independently between races and civilizations throughout the galaxy. The distinguishing feature they all have in common is the on the tip of the pole; a vibro-edged head with a stun module. It is said that these stun modules are so powerful that they can even knock out a full-grown wookiee. To achieve this, the force pike uses a concentrated nerve impulse, similar to that featured in the stun setting of a blaster rifle. Also, despite the name force pike, they have no relation to the Force, but it isn't unheard of for Force users to wield these formidable weapons.

At their lowest setting, a force pike can deliver an excruciating electrical shock; the higher settings tend to result in paralysis or death. At their highest settings, a force pike can slice through everything from flesh and bone to thin durasteel plating. Due to the vibro-edged head, with enough strength behind an attack, it can easily cleave through most things with very little effort. Generally, these are employed as defensive weapons. Due to their size and strength, they can easily parry attacks from a lightsaber as well as withstanding the blow. It has been known that due to their lower level settings that force pikes have also been used as torture weapons in interrogations.

The electrostaff is an electronic melee weapon constructed of lightsaber-resistant phrik alloy equiped with electromagnetic pulse-generating tips. Phrik is a rare metallic compound and is one of the few lightsaber resistant substances that we know of. Combined with tydirium to make the compound, phrik alloy is extremely durable and light. However, it is also very expensive and as a result it isn't mass produced for warfare. It is said that some staffs could penetrate and neutralize ray shields, but for the most part, they are simply used as a blunt-force melee weapon. They have been designed to have a longer reach than most lightsaber blades, allowing the user to fight a lightsaber weilder and keep themselves out of the enemy's range.

As with the force pikes, electrostaffs have emitters on each end of the weapon with different power settings. These also range from a stunning jolt all the way up to a deadly charge, and just like the force pikes, they could be used to incapacitate an opponent instead of killing them outright. In addition, it isn't unheard of for electrostaffs to be used as a torture device. In many ways, the two weapons are very similar with only minor differences setting them apart.

That's all the time we've got for you this week. In fact that's all we've got for you from Nik-Nak's Workshop. As we bring our weekly articles to a close we'd like to thank you all for supporting our column. Bringing you the best in tech, because you deserve it.

Force Reflection: How honest are you?

It is a common theme in literature and story-telling. The Old Republic is no exception. Every character has an element of truthiness in them. We all see the galaxy from our own point-of-view, and that limited perspective can make it easy to develop an understanding of the universe that fails to take into account the circumstances that may cause someone with a different perspective to end up with a completely different point of view.

One of those fundamental pieces of any character's moral development (or lack thereof) is how much or how little value they place on the concept of honesty. Some may view it as a sign of naivety and a weakness to be exploited through the art of deception. Others, like Sergeant Applejack here, demonstrates that being trustworthy is an essential part of making good frie... I mean powerful allies.

So for this Horse Reflection: How does your character know what is true? How important is honesty and integrity to them? How good are they at figuring out when someone is not being honest with them? Have they ever been in a situation where telling the truth would or did have negative consequences? Have they ever spun a lie that ended up completely backfiring?

Here's the scoop:

Our Freighter Captain was on Hoth doing some cold hard business, like freighter captains normally do on Hoth, when our Practical Padawan saw an opening. Seeing that our Freighter Captain was the enterprising sort, the Padawan approached the Captain, asking for passage aboard his ship. Our Freighter Captain declined, not wanting to get involved in Force-business, and when Mothering Master interfered, the Captain figured he'd made the right decision.

Business managed, our Freighter Captain was in the process of taking off, when the Practical Padawan took a flying leap onto the Captain's ship, grabbing onto the hull. Mothering Master followed suit, not wanting to leave their Padawan behind. Our Freighter Captain was ordered to land, so as not to harm the Jedi. Instead, he reversed the polarity of the hull, causing the Mothering Master to land lightly (and masterfully) on both feet on the hangar floor. The Padawan, however, landed in some leftover drying bantha poodoo. So remember, when asking deep philosophical questions about where to go next in life, think about your choices, as a blind leap could land you in some serious dung.

Mai Cash | HoloGossip

Carrick Station | Republic Fleet

[Based on an in-game story told by Quorvionn]

Welcome to Holoscopes! Predictions are made by Seers gifted with the Force but not biased towards either faction. Horoscopes are sorted by race. We hope your species' future isn't slavery! And boost a blind person's self-confidence this week by paying them a compliment or two.

Cathar
Something has been on your mind. It’s a black mark in your personal history that leaves a bad taste in your mouth like the memory of the Mandalorian crusade of your homeworld. But just as your race has recovered, so too must you. It has made you what you are today. It’s best to accept the past and move on.

Chiss
You owe someone an apology. It might be the Chiss Ascendancy, considering you probably left their ranks to join the Empire or become a bounty hunter. In a situation such as this, it’s in your best interest to make amends, at least for the lack of communication. Flexibility is a must this week.

Sith Pureblood
Being an entitled and noble species among your society, it’s not surprising that you believe your truth is the only truth. However, you may discover that someone close to you has fundamental ideological differences in opinion than you. Your relationship hinges on if you can swallow your pride enough to accept their views.

Human
Being the most widely spread species in the galaxy, humans have plenty of opportunities. This week, make sure to use a down-to-Coruscant approach when addressing these prospects. Now is not the time for extravagance or pride. Make sure to take the practical approach for the best results in your endeavors.

Miraluka
Face merchants prey off people like yourself. You’re focusing on the imperfections of your body. You may see people for who they truly are, but you know those around you don’t see your glow, only your outside. You need to learn to accept your physical flaws. They’re often as invisible to others as your glow is.

Twi’lek
Things have not been going your way. You feel stressed. Relax your head-tails and dance around a little to loosen up. Good things are coming your way. You just need to remain positive and take breaks from whatever is stressing you so that you can fully enjoy the good fortune in your future.

Zabrak
Your one-hyperlane-mind will be your greatest asset this week. You need to remain focused on your objectives. Temptations and distractions will be plentiful this week, but you must remember your goals and push onwards. If you allow insignificant circumstances to steer you off course, you’ll never accomplish the more important trials.

On the thirty second day of the expedition, having spent weeks in the endless expanse of sand known to the locals as the Dune Sea, I saw it: a great open pit, lined with teeth jutting from the rocky walls. Such repulsion is a rare feeling for me, as I gazed into the pit, looking at the chasm in the center.

I'd heard of the Sarlacci, a terrible breed of creature or plant, I'm not sure which, but one with such a powerful malevolence I regret to this day not destroying the creature of the Pit of Carkoon. But after so long in the sands, and my quarry so painfully close, and with no fuel to burn the demon where it lay rooted, I was forced to turn away.

This article is one that can be set aside from the others. This is not a hunt. Destroying every last Sarlacci is a service to the galaxy, and one I regret my remaining years do not permit me to do. For the number of Sarlacci I have destroyed is a disappointing one, deep, deep in the damp jungles of Dromund Kaas. And to this day its charred husk remains, beyond where even the bravest dare go.

But few of you would have ever heard of the Sarlacci. You should be thankful. Experts argue over whether it is a plant or an animal, but its cruel malevolence is unquestionable, for this demon of the botanical world keeps its prey, which can be almost anything short of the Great Krayt itself, alive for hundreds, possibly even thousands of years, slowly digesting it in its enormous stomach. And the whole while it tortures the suffering victim, causing it great neurological and physical pain. In short, it is nothing more than a monster.

So, how to kill it? Hunting it isn't difficult. Once rooted, the creature is unlikely to move again until she is completely engulfed by the male, a parasitic symbiote to the female that engulfs her over millennia. But the Sarlacc has weakness. I burnt the one I destroyed, after hacking off the root like tentacles that came out of its mouth to attempt to snare me. As the creature melted, some form of tongue or beak emerged from the maw, a feature that apparently only the oldest Sarlaccs bear. Remember, Sarlaccs like the damp, although they'll even root in the dry deserts of some planets. And the creatures can breed inter-galacticly. If you ever encounter one, take all measures to see it destroyed. Ghastly things.

Johnathon Claytan | Hero of Ryloth

Celebratory Reporter | Central Broadcasting News Service

Dedicated to my old friend, James Winston

I personally need a good night’s sleep or I will be crankier than C-3PO in the morning. But for some people, all-nighters are a way of life. Who needs beauty sleep when you’re already gorgeous, right? And then there are those who sleep until noon. Psh, breakfast is overrated anyways.

In the Star Wars universe, it’s often hard to tell what time it is on a certain planet, especially in SWTOR, where the lighting doesn’t change with the time. We often judge our character’s internal clock based on our own real-life time. In this way our characters can be like us, going to bed at the same time we do. But do they have their own opinions about when is the ideal time to go to sleep or wake up? Natives to Tatooine may be used to rising and setting with the twin suns. Dromund Kaas might make night owls out of most citizens, due to the complete lack of sunshine. Or spacers might have their own personalized sleep cycle to fit their piloting schedule. Just as our environment (work, school, social lives, RP) might keep us up or make us wake up early, our characters must have something that motivates their internal clock.

This Force Reflection asks: is your character a night or morning person? Do they have a natural internal clock that lets them know when the need to sleep or wake? Do their responsibilities encourage them to go to bed early or get up late? Do they feel groggy in the early morning or late at night? Or do they just get sleep when they can get it? Let us know in the comments below!

Core Worlds, right to the far reaches of the Outer Rim! This is your Guide to the Stars! This week we're taking a look at the Mid Rim world of Glee Anselm!

A peaceful aquatic planet in the Mid Rim, Glee Anselm's surface is largely covered in water or swamps, with only a few clear landmasses spotting to the surface. The planet has a very frequent seasonal change pattern, and as a result it tends to be ravaged by intense storms and hurricanes. The climate remains moderate for most of the standard year. Glee Anselm is home to two natural species: the Nautolan and the Anselmi. Both races have evolved naturally on the planet; the Nautolans under the water and the Anselmi make use of what few landmasses can be found.

Competition for land is what is believed to have led to the warlike nature of the Anselmi. With very little land, warring tribes began to form as the Anselmi began to fight amongst themselves. The Nautolans made use of the planets vast amount of water and as a result they flourished as the Anselmi diminished. As the Nautolans gradually came to the surface and acquired land for themselves, their natural abilities and strength were more than enough to handle the Anselmi that threatened their lands. This has led to the Nautolans making up the majority of the population of Glee Anselm while the Anselmi diminish due to their internal warfare.

The Nautolans, sometimes referred to as the Nautoloids, are an amphibious humanoid species. Their physiology is common to that of most amphibious species which includes low light vision and excellent swimming skills. On average, they are just under two meters tall with smooth green, blue or brown skin and large black or dark maroon eyes with lids that are seldom used. While they are capable of breathing underwater, they do not experience difficulties out of water like other water-based species. Nautolans possess exceptional olfactory and pheromone-sensing skills, enhanced by head tresses. These tendrils are generally used to detect the emotional state of another being and are most effective underwater.

We still know very little about Nautolan culture. As a result of very few Nautolans leaving Glee Anselm, they still remain shrouded in a lot of mystery. However, their music has become a highlight amongst savvy music collectors. Nautolan music is composed of sustained notes held in irregular patterns with occasional pauses. These pauses are considered to be the most important part of the music to the Nautolans, causing non-Nautolan listeners to misunderstand their artistic intent.

There's much more to Glee Anselm than strange music habits and stormy weather patterns, but that's all we've got time for. Be sure to check up
on
the HoloNet if you want to know more. For now, this has been your Guide to the Stars! Check back again next week!

Each week we will be providing you with a jawa's insight into the world
of tech! This week we're taking a look at a variation of the lightsaber: the lightwhip!

Also known as an energy whip or a laser whip, the lightwhip is a rare variation of the lightsaber. They generally function on the same principles and mechanics of a lightsaber, emitting coherent beams of energy that are used as a weapon. The main difference is the blade; rather than the straight meter long blades emitted by standard lightsabers, lightwhips feature long, flexible blades that can often extend several meters in length. To achieve this, rather than making use of one large crystal the way lightsabers do, lightwhips use multiple small crystals and the plasma in the blade has no cell barriers to keep it straight.

Just like lightsabers, the lightwhips blade can come in a variety of colors and shades based on the crystals it uses. They are mostly designed to emit a single blade—just like a standard lightsaber—though it isn't unheard of that some alterations can be made to allow the lightwhips to produce multiple tassels. These weapons are still rare and exotic weapons and they remain an unfamiliar occurrence among traditional duelists. Due to this, lightwhip wielders can usually enjoy a considerable amount of leverage over their opponents

.

The copious range and flexibility of the blade allows the attacker to stand at a range of several meters from their opponent. This flexibility also makes it difficult to parry with a standard straight blade as it could simply flex around the opponent's blade. Combined with the multiple tassels, it can easily overwhelm the defenses of an opponent. However, lightwhips have just as many drawbacks as their advantages. In the hands of an untrained wielder, you are just as likely to maim yourself as you are your opponent. What the blade gains in length, it loses in its power; unlike a standard lightsaber, the blade of a lightwhip can not always penetrate durasteel armor and walls.

Without proper momentum in an attack, the effects of the blade falls short of what you might expect from something similar to a lightsaber. As stated earlier, they may be difficult to parry as an incoming attack. However, the opposite is also true. The flexibility of the blade makes it unsuitable for parrying attacks, leaving the wielder vulnerable to both great speed and brute force. In fact, lightwhip blades have been known to short out violently when struck with enough force, leaving the wielder without a weapon.

That's all the time we've got for you this week. Be sure to check back next week for another issue of Nik-Nak's Workshop. Bringing you the best in tech, because you deserve it.

Sometimes it's more fun to be timid. It's often said that the fun is in the journey, not the destination. And the trek of personal growth from quiet little doormat to master buttox kicker makes quite a long and eventful journey.

Then there's the out-of-character social dynamics. Fitting into a social scene is no easy task for many people, especially when you don't know anyone and you gotta break the ice yourself. MMO's like SWTOR are designed to be social environments. These factions include: Jedi and Sith reformers, defectors of Republic Special Forces and Imperial Intelligence, Freelance Traders and Mandalorian Freedom-Fighters. This is all false information of the terrorist group Galactic Fifth Column. Their lies are spread on how they try fight corruption, oppression, and exploitation in the Republic, Empire, and Underworld. That is all made up so they can most likely get sympathy from the common man for when they choose to strike down on us and cause more destruction than the destruction already caused by our still on-going war with the Empire. These terrorists are said to have a huge network of moles, informants, and lower-level factions or "cells" spread throughout our galaxy; our home to spy on us and learn both the Republic and Empire's secrets so they can get the upper hand. Others believe that this group was linked with the long presumed extinct Jedi sect, The Order of the Crimson Blade. Most deny the existence of this group entirely. Here's the scoop:

Sith One walks in with the Jedi and their conversation begins. Sith Two looks about, unlikely this lout, and approaches her comrade and friend. Sith One and Sith Two, as they are likely to do, team up on the poor Jedi who has no clue. They claim righteousness, using the Force as a tool, to use as they want. The Jedi, however, is losing her cool. She cannot explain how this isn't the plot, this is not how to use the Force as a muse; but she fails as ever to try to be clever. Sith One and Sith Two mock her a lot, as ever.

"The Force is all about strife," say Sith One and Sith two. "It's not about life, it's about causing havoc and trouble!" The Jedi is quite out of her bubble, a place where she usually finds peace. She is about to be fleeced. She delivers platitudes to Sith One and Sith Two, but her words lack fortitude. Sith One and Sith Two, as they are likely to do, shout back at her as she leaves, "Go and grieve for your lack of control! Say goodbye and cry your way out of this, lonely Jedi!" But we can't have it all, as we know, the Force is sometimes just show, like a broken glass strewn about the room. Fetch us a broom, we'll clean this up the old fashioned way. Have a good day, as we bid goodnight to Sith One and Sith Two, and the Jedi, too.

Mai Cash | HoloGossip

The Slippery Slopes Cantina - Nar Shaddaa

[Based on in-game roleplay by Zhoros and Edzira]

Force Reflection: What's the strangest thing you've ever done?

That bizarre event that makes you stop and think, "What in the void am I doing?" And then shrug and carry on. Something out of the ordinary. Strange. Odd. Weird even. And such a thing sticks with you. After all, something as weird as singing about dreams with a few dozen hairy men is hardly the sort of thing you would forget about in a hurry, no matter how many cold showers you have. After all, as a great, albeit psychopathic man once said: "Whatever doesn't kill you, only makes you stranger."

So what is it that makes you different? What quirky character perks do you have? Do people claim you have a beard so manly it's made out of an alloy of Mandalorian Iron, Phrik and Cortosis? Do you play with toy Banthas and Rancors on the bridge of the ship you pilot? Do you occasionally duel a sword-wielding horse armed only with a frying pan? Do you sing casually in the middle of a battlefield, or fight small spiders with woks? What makes you different, in the strange way?

[Artwork: http://alicexz.deviantart.com/]

Welcome to Holoscopes! Predictions are made by Seers gifted with the Force but not biased towards either faction. Horoscopes are sorted by race. We hope your species’ future isn’t slavery! And watch out for pale people practicing their shadowboxing.

Miraluka
The people around you may start glowing. More than usual. Your positive attitude, if maintained, will influence your friends and allies. This week you will see a dramatic increase in your charisma and social skills. Take advantage of them while they last!

Human
Humans breed like divviks, and this week that’s lucky for you! Tensions will mount between you and that special someone, be it a long time love or a secret crush. New excitement will fuel your relationship like isotope 5, so seize the opportunity!

Twi’lek
Although your people are the most popular slave species in the galaxy, this week it’s time to take a stand against oppression. You will be confronted by someone of authority, but don’t back down! Stay strong in your convictions.

Zabrak
Your horns may need sharpening. The events of the last week have caused you to leave some things unmanaged. Make sure all of your affairs are in order and that you haven’t lost anything important. Including your horn sharpener.

Mirialan
No good deed goes unrewarded. Your spirituality and closeness to your deities will show in your actions over the next week where you will have ample opportunities to benefit those around you. Make the higher powers proud!

Rattataki
Start your shadowboxing now; in the next week you will need to be prepared to face off with rivals and antagonists of all sorts. Gather your clan and stay close to your allies. It’s probably best to avoid confrontation for the time being.

Sith Pureblood
Despite your constant angered demeanor, this week is a time for you to relax. Let those facial ridges soften for a minute. Business as usual will give you some time to pursue your hobby. But don’t get too lazy! The Empire wouldn’t like that.

Other
Just as you don’t appreciate people judging you at a glance, be careful this week on important decisions. Make sure to evaluate both options. Just like you would patiently explain that you are not, in fact, a human, use a steady hand in your dealings and watch out for hidden intensions.
